Seattle Theatre Works presents

Luigi Pirandello’s

Six Characters in Search of an Author

It caused a riot in the theatre when it first premiered in Rome in 1921.

It cost two Cornish professors their jobs after they tried to stage it in Seattle in 1928.

It broke new ground and laid the foundation for some of the most important voices in 20th century theatre – Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, Caryl Churchill, Tom Stoppard, and Will Eno to name a few.

Now Nobel Prize winning playwright Luigi Pirandello’s absurdist classic “Six Characters in Search of an Author” comes to modern day Seattle – literally.

While a company of fringe artists rehearse a short play festival called “Seattle After Hours” on Capitol Hill, a group of six lost characters burst into the theatre and beg this small company of actors to stage their tragic story – a story the playwright who conceived them refused to write.

As the characters relay their story and the actors begin to stage it, the audience not only begins to learn about the horrific tale these characters are eternally embroiled in, but they are also confronted with philosophical questions about the nature of reality vs. illusion.

Adapted from a variety of translations, the text was additionally developed during the rehearsal process through a series of improvisational exercises with the performers playing the acting troupe creating versions of themselves in the play complete with references to contemporary Seattle – the traffic, the coffee, and the theatre community.

“Six Characters in Search of an Author” plays June 10 – 25 at the Erickson Theatre, 1524 Harvard Ave., Seattle. See the website seattletheatreworks.org for the performance schedule and to purchase tickets.

Also, don’t miss the late night show the actors in the play are rehearsing – “Seattle After Hours”, playing July 17, 18, 24, and 25 following “Six Characters in Search of an Author”
